An OSRS flipping workflow: margin is only the beginning

A promising flip needs both a buy and a sell. A large displayed price gap is only a starting point: the trade still has to fill, survive tax and return your GP in a useful amount of time.

1. Work backwards from the sale

Write down the price you expect to receive, the applicable GE tax and the maximum price you can pay. Use the actual item’s rules; exemptions, limits and tax rules can change.

Net profit = quantity × (sell price − buy price − tax per item)

For an illustrative trade, buying 100 units at 9,500 GP and selling at 10,000 GP gives a 50,000 GP gross margin. If the applicable tax were 200 GP per unit, net profit would be 30,000 GP. These are example assumptions, not a live item quote or a universal tax rule.

2. Ask whether the price is repeatable

Compare recent activity with the longer chart. A single unusually high sale is weaker evidence than repeated trading around that level. A quiet market may show an attractive spread simply because buyers and sellers cannot agree. Do not confuse a displayed price with an offer for your entire quantity.

3. Size the position for your exit

Decide how much GP can remain tied up if the sale is slow. Check the item’s current buy limit in game or against its source page, then use a small test purchase and sale where practical. The amount you can afford is not necessarily the amount the market can absorb.

4. Compare time as well as return

A 30,000 GP profit over ten minutes and the same profit over six hours use your capital differently. Record actual fill times and sale proceeds. Repeatedly lowering an offer also changes the profit you first calculated.

5. Define what would change your mind

Before buying, decide what evidence would invalidate the idea: falling activity, a lower exit price, or an update that changes demand. Ask the assistant to identify uncertainty and opposing explanations. Avoid a plan that only works if the price keeps rising.

Try the workflow

Open the market tool, pin a few candidates and ask: “Compare these items’ recent trends. What should I verify before trying a short flip?” Then check the response against the charts and your own offers.
